So as we continue into this little foray of oddity I will be comparing elements of the two movies to point out why Rock a Doodle, while still odd as anything is still worth a watch. Pebble is just weird. I already covered story so I feel it's best to hit on songs and characters.
Songs-
Both of these movies have really weird songs, but I have to go with Rock a Doodle on this one. Why? Because in Pebble and the Penguin we get numbers that consist of puns, the villain's laughing habits (Which honestly is my favorite song of the movie), and a couple numbers that the visuals were so odd I totally don't remember what the songs were about, and a sappy love song.
In Rock a Doodle we get farm themed Elvis type songs. Much more tolerable and kinda fun in points. Plus the Bouncers sing about Bouncing. It's hilarious in a WTF kind of way. Now the Owls have kind of pathetic songs in structure, but they're fun too. I mean you have to have some kind of enjoyment out of Owls singing about how once your flashlight batteries die you're as good as dead.
Characters-
Mains-
Both of these movies have annoying main characters. Something about Hubie's hat just irritates me to no end. Maybe because it acts like ears. Hats don't move. While it's novel to have a female character who isn't interested in falling with the guy with the best pebbles on the beach, it's kinda ruined for me since they point out time and time again that she's the prettiest penguin there. Hubie's sidekick the Rockhopper is fun though. He's your generic tough guy with a soft heart but I actually like him. Maybe because he's so angry all the time, it's really quite funny.
The biggest downfall of Rock a Doodle is the main character. Not so much because his character is a fail, even if they did slap on size and courage issues so the movie would have a moral, but because his voice actor is TERRIBLE. This kid has this weird nasally voice and sounds like he's talking around a rock. It's really irritating to listen to. I didn't realize it when I was a kid, but now it's just grating. Again I actually don't like most of these characters. The dog's shoe gag is boring and the magpie is not really in there for any point but to cause unnecessary trouble (but voiced by Mandark which is pretty rad), and Goldie Pheasant is another one with an annoying voice though with her it's wispy and warbly. I do like the mouse since she kicks ass and will kick your ass, and oddly enough I do like Chanticleer. It's kind of touching that this guy so sad that his friends are a bunch of back stabbing dicks that he goes out to make millions by singing the blues.
Villians-
This category is what really clinched Rock a Doodle as the winner for me. For Bluth priding himself on character design I have NO idea what he was thinking when he designed Drake, the villain of Pebble. The penguin is scary, and not in a legitimate villainous way. More of a "What horrible toxic sludge did you roll in to mutate like THAT?" kind of way. You need to look it up. I can't possible describe how weird the character looks.
The Duke of Owls, while not really scary, has the air of villainy around him and is funny in his manor. He is so matter of fact about being evil and has a certain regal nature to his evilness. While he pretty much never gets his hands into dirty work when he does you kinda know you're screwed. The heroes don't even really beat him. They need to summon the freakin' SUN in order to defeat him and he isn't even killed. Just turned small and fat with a voice like Cartman from South Park. The Duke of Owls really does feel like an unsung Villain. He's so delightfully devious but no one pays attention to him.
While both of these movies aren't great Rock a Doodle is worth a watch if purely for the Duke of Owls. A great villain can make a weird movie good. A cracked out villain makes a weird movie feel like an LSD nightmare.
